Our workshop is available to Pittsburgh area K-12 teachers and community groups.  Our goal is to promote literacy and encourage creativity using recycled materials for language acquisition, social studies, creative writing, art, and science using experiential learning.

Objectives: By the end of the workshops, participants will be able to:

• Identify and describe Cartonera.
• Better understand Latin America and how the Cartonera movement began.
• Think about what cartonera could mean in their classroom and understand next steps in building a community of authors/designers/publishers within their school.
• Be familiar with how recycling and literacy go together in projects that are undertaken in socio- economic context.
• Experiment with creative approaches to vocabulary, drawings, and illustrations.
• Create partnerships and collaborations with teachers on different subject areas at their school.

Nuestro taller está disponible para maestros de K-12 y grupos comunitarios del área de Pittsburgh. Nuestro objetivo es promover la alfabetización y fomentar la creatividad utilizando materiales reciclados para la adquisición del lenguaje, estudios sociales, escritura creativa, arte y ciencia mediante el aprendizaje experimental.

Objetivos: Al finalizar los talleres, los participantes serán capaces de:

• Identificar y describir Cartonera
• Comprender mejor América Latina y cómo comenzó el movimiento Cartonera.
• Pensar en lo que podría significar cartonera en su salón de clases y comprenda los próximos pasos para construir una comunidad de autores/diseñadores/editores dentro de su escuela.
• Estar familiarizado con cómo el reciclaje y la alfabetización van de la mano en proyectos que se llevan a cabo en un contexto socioeconómico.
• Experimentar con enfoques creativos de vocabulario, dibujos e ilustraciones.
• Crear asociaciones y colaboraciones con maestros en diferentes áreas temáticas en su escuela.
• Escribir para audiencias auténticas (abuelos, familiares, amigos, maestros), permitiendo que los estudiantes y otros educadores se conviertan en autores/diseñadores/editores.

On November 17th, 2021, Martha Mantilla co-led the Cartonera Teacher Workshop organized by the Center for Latin American Stidies (CLAS). Twenty-two teachers participated. MAnuel Roman-Lacacayo, Associate Director, gave the welcoming remarks. Paloma Celis Carvajal, Curator for Latin American, Iberian, and U.S. Latino Collections at New York Public Library and former Ibero-American Studies Bibliographer at University of Wisconsin-Madison and creator of the largest Cartonera Publisher Collection, joined by zoom and talked about the history of Cartonera and how it expanded all over the world. 

Clare Withers and Megan Massanelli shared how Archives & Special Collections has integrated cartonera books into class instruction at the University of Pittsburgh and how teachers could access the ULS’s holdings of cartonera books in the future. At the end, the teachers presented their Cartonera Books. 

CLAS facilitated a Cartonera book-making through this workshop focused on Pittsburgh schools and the larger community. The workshop promoted ways in which language, social studies, and science teachers can work together using their creativity to recycle basic materials while promoting literacy. 

El 17 de noviembre de 2021, Martha Mantilla codirigió el Taller de Maestros Cartoneros organizado por el Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos (CLAS). Participaron veintidós profesores. Manuel Roman-Lacacayo, Director Asociado, dio las palabras de bienvenida. Paloma Celis Carvajal, curadora de colecciones latinoamericanas, ibéricas y latinas estadounidenses en la Biblioteca Pública de Nueva York y antigua bibliógrafa de Estudios Iberoamericanos en la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison y creadora de la colección editorial más grande de Cartonera, se unió a zoom y habló sobre la historia de Cartonera y cómo se expandió por todo el mundo.

Clare Withers y Megan Massanelli compartieron cómo la Unidad de Archivos y Colecciones Especiales, ha integrado los libros de cartonera en la instrucción de clase en la Universidad de Pittsburgh y cómo los maestros podrían acceder a las existencias de libros de cartonera de la biblioteca de Pitt en el futuro. Al finalizar, los docentes presentaron sus Libros Cartonera.

CLAS facilitó la elaboración de un libro en Cartonera a través de este taller enfocado en las escuelas de Pittsburgh y la comunidad en general. El taller promovió formas en que los profesores de idiomas, estudios sociales y ciencias pueden trabajar juntos usando su creatividad para reciclar materiales básicos mientras promueven la alfabetización.
