Erroll Garner Archive @ Pitt

Letters by Martha

In an archival collection, correspondence can reveal some of the more intimate day-to-day happenings in the subject's life, while also reflecting some larger themes. The letters in the Garner Archive are certainly no exception. Much of the correspondence in the collection is from Martha Glaser, who addressed matters such as appearances and business concerns in her capacity as Erroll's manager. However, a significant amount of the letters in the collection also detail the exchanges between Martha and Erroll themselves, providing insight to their close relationship.

Even a perfunctory glance at the list of correspondents listed in the collection reveals a Who's Who of popular American culture and the jazz scene in the middle of the 20th century. Some of these correspondents include:

  • Count Basie
  • Johnny Carson
  • Clint Eastwood
  • Alfred Hitchcock
  • Langston Hughes
  • Wynton Marsalis
  • Cole Porter
  • Eleanor Roosevelt
  • President Harry Truman

A complete list of correspondents can be found in the collection guide, Boxes 1-4.
