Building Digital Exhibits Using Omeka @ Pitt

Creating an Account

Sign up for an account at https://www.omeka.net/signup using the “Start your free Omeka trial” button at the top of the page.

  • We recommend you use your Pitt address for your Omeka account.
  • Messages from Omeka may go to your Outlook spam folder or your quarantine folder on MyPitt. Please check both if you are having trouble.

After signing up, you will receive a confirmation email. You must confirm your account creation before you can be invited to any other sites.

Creating a Site

  1. From your Site Dashboard, click the "Add a Site" button.
    • Trial (free) account users can only create one Omeka site, although they may be added as a user to multiple sites.
  2. Choose your site Subdomain Name and Site Title, and add a short (optional) Site Description.
    • Your URL will follow the pattern [subdomain-name].omeka.net
    • You cannot change your Subdomain Name, so choose carefully!
    • You can change your site Title and Description later

Accessing a Site

Accessing Your Sites

Sites you have created or been invited to will appear on your Omeka Dashboard. You may need to look under the "Others' Sites" tab to find sites created by other people where you have been added as a user.

Under the site title you will have a few options:

  • View Site: this will bring you to the public view of your site. If you are logged in, you will be able to see all items that you have permission to view, even those that are not yet public.
  • Manage Site: this will bring you to the dashboard for your Omeka site.
  • Delete Site: this option is only available to you if you are the site creator.

Click "Manage Site" to start editing!

Accepting a Site Invitation

  1. A site owner needs to know the email address you used for your Omeka account in order to invite you to their site as a user.
  2. When you are invited to a new site, you will receive an invitation email. Click the link to accept the invitation.
  • When you click the link, you may receive a message that says “Invalid Code.” This is a known issue that the Omeka developers are trying to resolve. Log in to your account at https://www.omeka.net and check to see if the site appears under "Others' Sites." If so, you now have access to that site. Click "Manage Site" to access the site dashboard.
