Katz Research and Library Introduction

Use this guide to learn about key library resources and services available at Pitt.

Business Resources

As a Pitt student, you have access to a wide range of business resources.

Below is an introduction to some of the most helpful resources you can use to conduct business research.

If you have any questions, contact the business librarian, or start with our online guide to Doing Business Research @Pitt.

Databases

To view a list of business specific databases, head to the Business Databases guide.

In order to access these databases, you must use the links on the library website. If you are on campus, you should be connected immediately. If not, you should be prompted to log in with your Pitt credentials. If you have questions about accessing our databases, please Ask Us.

What types of databases does Pitt subscribe to? Below are brief descriptions of a few of the main types of databases we subscribe to.

Article Databases

These contain abstracts and full-text articles from newspapers, magazines, trade publications, and scholarly journals. Sometimes, they also include industry profiles, SWOT analysis, company reports, and more! Digging in these databases is almost always a good idea because you never know what gems you might find. Examples include Business Source Complete and Scopus.

Industry/Market Databases

These databases contain primarily industry reports or market data. Examples include IBISWorld and Passport.

Financial Databases

These databases contain information on company and/or industry ratios, stock prices, financial filings, etc. Examples include ValueLine and Capital IQ.

International Databases

These databases focus on international information, such as statistics, country profiles, etc. Examples include CountryWatch and International Financial Statistics Online.

PITTCat+

PittCat allows you to search for a lot of the library's resources at once. It is particularly good if you are looking for inter/cross-disciplinary articles or books. However, many of the business databases will not show up in PITTCat+ results, and so it is imperative to also search in the subject specific resources.

Google

Sometimes, using advanced search techniques in Google will help you find information. This is particularly true when doing private company or emerging/niche market research.

Head to the Research Tips and Strategies section of this guide to learn how to more effectively use Google to find specific information.
