This guide provides information about using the library at Pitt, including help with researching, writing, and citing.

Loan Policies

Borrowing Books:

The University Library System (ULS) has over 5 million books in our collection for you to use. To check out books and other materials from the library, you will use your Pitt ID.

Both undergraduate and graduate students my check out an unlimited number of books for one academic year. For more detailed information, please refer to Length of Loans & Fines.

Borrowing Journals:

Journals can be borrowed for 7 days.

Borrowing Multi-media Items:

  • Stark Media Services (Film & Audio Collection), located in Hillman Library, houses film, video, and audio collections:
    • Film and Video: The film and video collection primarily supports classroom instruction across disciplines with an emphasis on Film Studies
    • Film and videos can be borrowed for 14 days.

Borrowing Devices & Equipment:

Library Account Overview

To get to My Account, log in to PittCat using the Sign In menu in the upper right corner.  Once you log in, you will be at the Overview page.  You can access several services using the headings at the top of the Overview page:

  • Loans lists you what you have borrowed and when those items are due back to the library.  You can renew any item by selecting that item and then clicking on the RENEW button for that item.
  • Requests lists any library material requests you have made.
  • Fines + Fees lists any fines or fees you have incurred.  You can use the Pay Fine link to pay your fines online.
  • Blocks + Messages details
  • Personal Details lists library account information like your home address or contact information.
