During the 1990's Stern received further recognition. In 1991, Leaving Another Kingdom was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and 1993 Bread Without Sugar received the 1993 Patterson Poetry Prize. In 1998 Stern won the National Book Award for poetry for This Time: New and Selected Poems.
