There were 71 community profiles published by Pittsburgh's Department of City Planning in 1974. The profiles presented "information, primarily from the United States Census of Population and Housing, for use by citizens and community groups." All have been scanned and are available online in the Historic Pittsburgh Book Collection.

The Pittsburgh Neighborhood Alliance was formed in 1969 and it's Pittsburgh Neighborhood Atlas project published 69 neighborhood atlases in 1977. All have been scanned and are available online in the Historic Pittsburgh Book Collection.

On September 28, 1978, Carletta Washington et al. filed a class-action suit against the School District of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Board of Education, and the Superintendent of Schools requiring the defendants to develop a local plan for system-wide desegregation of city schools. The Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Civil Liberty Foundation joined forces with local churches to aid in the desegregation of Pittsburgh's schools.
