Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month (LHHM) 2024

Celebrated annually from September 15 - October 15 to acknowledge the culture and contributions of Hispanic/Latina/e/o/x in the United States. This LibGuide highlights the resources and initiatives of those communities

Dance & Music

 

              The Afro-Colombian Dance Ensemble 

Promotes Latin American culture through dance. Directed by Professor Melissa Teodoro who is a research specialist in Afro-Colombian dance, ACDE has performed throughout Western Pennsylvania in numerous festivals, conferences and educational venues, as well as in West Virginia, Ohio, and California. Members of ACDE have the opportunity to travel with Professor Teodoro to different locations in the Caribbean coast of Colombia where they conduct ethnographic research of Afro-Colombian dance and culture.

Spreads salsa and bachata in the student community in Pittsburgh! Offers beginner and intermediate salsa and bachata lessons. FREE for students!    

 

          Bésame

A traditional musical group that specializes in music from Latin America, with emphasis on the sounds of Colombia.                                         

 

  CALLE BOMBA - Machete-Kisumontao     

Music ensemble of Puerto Rican locals Bomba drummer, dancer, singer María Eugenia “Geña” Nieves Escoriaza, Bomba performer and dance instructor, Gloria Rodríguez-Ransom, and accompanied by some of the best percussionists from the Tri-State area. Calle Bomba is based on Puerto Rican Bomba ‘rumbones’ (unplanned, generous, block parties) that are spontaneous community generated celebrations that respond directly to community happenings, needs and values. Performances and/or workshops will include interactive performance/instruction in the three, basic, Bomba skills: drumming, dancing, and lyric composing depending on the event and project.

 

   The Nego Gato Afro-Brazilian Music and Dance Ensemble

Brings the rich African influenced rhythms and dances originating in El Salvador, Bahai, Brazil, a region known for custom deeply rooted in the traditions and spirituality of ancestral Africa.

Mexico Lindo 

Mercado y Gallería de Artesanías with a wonderful selection of items representing some of the most beloved and famous icons from Mexican and Latin American cultures, such as: Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, San Juan Diego, the Virgin of Guadalupe, Che Guevara, Emiliano Zapata, Maria Sabina, and an astounding assortment of items for the commemoration of the Day of the Dead.

 

 

 

La Feria - Peruvian Restaurant and Gallery 

La Feria is a restaurant serving Peruvian cuisine and a shop/ gallery for Peruvian clothing and folk art.
