Children's Literature - Bradford Campus

This guide is designed to help locate resources for Children's Literature.

Getting Started

Begin by brainstorming possible book selections:

  • Sign in to your account in library.pitt.edu
  • Use the Children's Core Collection to browse award winners and "essential" selections.
  • Use the Curriculum Resource Libguide, a great read-alouds for picture book ideas.
  • Use blogs or lists like New York Public Library's "125 Kids Books We Love" and filter results by picture books.
  • Browse PittCat using subject terms search such as "juvenile literature" or keyword search with picture books. 

Using PittCat to find titles & reviews

To find a title in PittCat, go to library.pitt.edu and select "Advanced Search." 

In advance search, in the search filters, drop the option from 'Any Field" to "Title."

Then, copy and paste or type the book's title into the first line. 

Select "Search."

 

An example below shows the difference between a book title record in Hanley's CRC and a book review record.

Locating Your Item in Hanley's CRC

To locate the item you found in PittCat, select the record. 

In the record, look beneath the title and author information to "Available at" 

If Bradford Campus Library - Hanley Curriculum Resource Center is listed, next look to the Library of Congress Call Number that comes after, such as E450 .B873 2020 for Box: Henry Brown Mails Himself to Freedom.

The Library of Congress system is used to organize items in the CRC, and it follows an alphabetical and numerical order. Write down the call number (E450 .B873 2020) and find your way to the CRC E section. 

If you are unable to locate your title, ask a librarian for help!
