In March 2022, Women’s History Month, Stark Media Services highlighted some of the female directors who have contributed to the cinematic medium throughout its history. From the revolutionary presence of directors like Lois Weber and Dorothy Arzner in film’s infancy, to the boundary-pushing avant-garde of filmmakers like Maya Deren and Chantal Akerman, to the genre-defining and redefining impact of directors as disparate as Nancy Meyers, Jane Campion, Kathryn Bigelow, Kasi Lemmons, and Claire Denis, this was just a selection of some of the most important and fascinating filmmakers we’re proud to have in our film collection. Accompanying the films were a selection of key texts recommended by Robin Kear, the University of Pittsburgh's Liaison Librarian for Film and Media Studies, English, and Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies.
You can explore the films and filmmakers spotlighted below, where you will find lists of the films and books that were featured on the display along with links to their PittCat pages where you can request them, learn more about their credits, and more!
