If you have not already signed in to PittCat using your Pitt computing account, please do so now. Signing in gives you access to the most results and allows seamless requesting of materials from other campuses and inter library loan.. The sign in option is in the upper right hand corner of your screen.
If you want more control over your search results, use the Advanced Search option. The Advanced Search box can be accessed by clicking the ADVANCED SEARCH link to the right of the single search box. Here it is highlighted in red
The Advanced Search interface looks similar to the image below. Advanced Search helps you focus your search using multiple search terms or phrases and includes built-in boolean operators that help you narrow or broaden your search. You can choose whether to search for Books, Articles, and More; Library Catalog; and Course Reserves prior to entering search terms.
The Advanced Search drop down menus help you begin to filter your results before you even click Search.
-The drop down menu listed under Any Field provides a list of searchable fields such as Title, Author, Subject, ISSN, etc. For example, Title allows you to limit your results to a specific journal title such as The New England Journal of Medicine.
-You can select where you want to search for a particular phrase using the menu listed under contains. *Note that "starts with" in the drop down menu currently only works when searching the Title field.
- Start date and End date ranges allows you to input a publication date range. With this feature, you can limit your search to more recent or older materials.
- Material type allows you to limit your search to journals, books, articles, images, and more.
- Searches can be also limited by Language (e.g. Chinese, English, French, Spanish).
