This guide is designed to help students enrolled in EDUC 1451 with research for assignments and papers.

Read - Brainstorm - Map - Search

  1. Using major concepts for your topic, brainstorm synonyms and related terms.
  2. Map, or list, related terms together. This list might expand and contract as you progress in your search. This map might be a simple list, a highlighted list, or intersecting circles.
  3. Search one term from each of the major concepts in one of the library's education related databases (see the "Locating Articles & More" tab).

Read: Danielson: “A Framework for Teaching

  • Example: Danielson 2a: “The classroom Environment: Establishing a Culture for Learning”

Brainstorm Question:   "Are children's books of value for helping children develop empathy and respect for others

(a key for establishing a culture for learning)?”

Brainstorm Keywords:

empathy      children's literature      young learners       respect      picture books     children

civility        children's books          elementary students       emotional intelligence

Search:  I would combine the following terms in a search in Academic Search Premier:

Empathy   AND   “children’s literature”   AND   “young learners”

If you do not find enough relevant articles, change or drop one of the terms.
