About the Class

Illustration from the first edition of Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens

19th Century British Literature brings together two standard, well-defined literary periods: the Romantic Period and the Victorian Period.  In this class we will think about “periodization” (about the desire to classify literary production)  and about the relationship between literary production and history—in our case, a history that includes empire and revolution, royalty and democracy, the slave trade and abolition, mass literacy and the development of the modern city,  the industrial revolution and the beginnings of modern science.
