Whitney Biennial 2017 by
Since its introduction by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1932, the Whitney Biennial has charted new developments in art and brought emerging artists to light. The first to be held in the Whitney's critically acclaimed new building in Manhattan's meatpacking district, the 2017 Biennial is curated by Christopher Y. Lew and Mia Locks. With a history of exhibiting work by the most promising and influential artists and provoking debate, the Biennial is the longest running survey of American art. This book features texts and images representing the Biennial participants who work in a variety of media and include Postcommodity. As a record of the artists and ideas presented in the exhibition, this catalogue serves as an essential resource on current trends in contemporary art in the United States.
Postcommodity is a transdisciplinary art collective that consists of Raven Chacon, Cristóbal Martínez and Kade L. Twist. The three artists live and work in the American Southwest and, in addition to their work together as Postcommodity, have individual art practices as well as careers in fields ranging from music to public policy to education.
Centring the Indigenous
This article enters into dialogue with Indigenous-centered literature through a close reading of a multimedia installation by the Indigenous art collective Postcommodity. It introduces the theoretical concept of the ‘trans-Indigenous’ to situate this distinctive collaborative art in the context of global Indigenous cultures. The article outlines aspects of a shared Indigenous worldview found in the work and situates this trans-Indigenous relational art within the critical debates surrounding relational art.
