The Research Process

  • Develop a topic that asks a question or poses a problem that interests you.
  • Select appropriate search terms for your subject.  Use the worksheet below for help.
    For example:

    • What are some of the latest breakthroughs in cancer drugs? Cancer drugs AND breakthrough
    • How do drugs fit into eastern religions? --> drugs AND religions
    • What are the risks of vaccination for children?-->"vaccination risk" AND children
    • What happens during Drug shortages?--> "drug shortages" AND society
    • What leads to adult prescription drug abuse --> prescription medicine AND drug abuse NOT children
    • Will drug legalization help the economy? --> drug legalization AND economic aspects
    • Does marijuana use cause schizophrenia? --> cannabis AND schizophrenia
    • How do drugs affect our water supply?-->pharmaceuticals AND wastewater AND environment
    • Does drug use contribute to birth defects--> drug abuse AND pregnancy
  • Search PittCat and subject oriented databases.
  • Revise your topic. Determine how you will answer your question.
  • Evaluate your resources carefully!

Critical Thinking Process For Research
