Online citation managers are an easy way to keep track of all of your references. The University Library System resources work with tools such as Mendeley, EndNote, and Zotero. These are tools for importing citations from sources like PittCat and article databases that can automatically integrate them into your research paper and bibliography.
Please be aware that plagiarism is a major concern for the University community. Using proper citations is a critical component of avoiding plagiarism, but there is more to watch out for.
Have a look at the library's tutorial, "Avoiding Plagiarism," then please ask a librarian or a professor if you have any more questions about plagiarism.
Example of an Annotated Entry (pp. 370-375 of the APA Manual[1])
Armstrong, T. (1994). Multiple intelligences in the classroom. Alexandria, VA:
Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
Armstrong describes each of seven intelligences identified by Howard Gardner. He offers an informal checklist for identifying personal strengths in the intelligences and suggests classroom applications. This book is a valuable tool for teachers at any level, with concretesuggestions for classroom applications. (NOTE: This paragraph should be double spaced)
[1] American Psychological Association. (2001). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.). Washington, DC: Author.
APA (American Psychological Association) Style originated in 1929, when a group of psychologists, anthropologists, and business managers convened and sought to establish a simple set of procedures, or style rules, that would codify the many components of scientific writing to increase the ease of reading comprehension.
As with other editorial styles, APA Style consists of rules or guidelines that a publisher observes to ensure clear and consistent presentation of written material. It concerns uniform use of such elements as selection of headings, tone, and length, punctuation and abbreviations, presentation of numbers and statistics, construction of tables and figures, citation of references, and many other elements that are a part of a manuscript. In-text Citation with APA
The APA style calls for three kinds of information to be included in in-text citations. The author's last name and the work's date of publication must always appear, and these items must match exactly the corresponding entry in the references list. The third kind of information, the page number, appears only in a citation to a direct quotation.
....(Crockatt, 1995).
Direct quote from the text
"The potentially contradictory nature of Moscow's priorities surfaced first in its policies towards East Germany and Yugoslavia," (Crockatt, 1995, p. 1).
Major Citations for a Reference List/Bibliography
