Discovering PITTCat+: Refining Your Search

Get help using all the features of the library's online discovery tool, PITTCat+


Using the fields on the left hand of the search results screen allows you to easily include and exclude items from your search results.

In this first section, you can limit the results by clicking on the type of resource you're seeking.


Use Content Type to include or exclude particular types of resources.

Journal Articles are generally articles in scholarly journals. They can be available in both print and electronic formats.

Publication Date can be limited by using the slider, entering in a particular date range, or using the quick links. 

You can use the Discipline section to include or exclude one or more disciplines from your search results. 

You can also limit your search results by Subject Terms using PITTCat+. Subject terms are assigned by content providers and are useful for focusing research on broader, narrower, or related topics.
Click on language to limit your results based on the language in which they are written.
Click on Library Location to limit your search results to a specific library. Patrons can order a book from any of the Pitt campuses using Get It. 


PittCat Classic

If you're searching for books or ebooks, you can also search PittCat Classic.

  • Click on the PittCat Classic tab and enter your query in the text box. 
  • You can click the dropdown to search by keyword, title, author, etc. 

Book Record Display

  • If you find a book that you like in PittCat+, you can view where an item is located, what the call number is or to see if its checked out by clicking on the title. This will take you to the catalog record in Pittcat Classic.The record looks like this:
