When You Need to Consult a Story Index...

These indices provide cross referencing of a variety of types of stories and tales.  Visit Motif Help to learn how to use the indices.

How do I find stories in the library?

If using Dewey Decimal Classification:

  • Folktales, Fairytales, and Fables are cataloged as 398.2

If using Library of Congress Classification:

  • Folktales are cataloged as GR
  • Fairytales are cataloged as PZ8 and PR
  • Fables are cataloged as PN980 through 995
  • Tales in Picturebook format that are not cataloged as fiction are often cataloged as PZ7

When you can't find what you need, ask your librarian!
