Evaluating Web Sources

When you search the Web, you're going to find a lot of information . . .but is it accurate and reliable? There are no editors and reviewers to monitor the content of webpages. You will have to determine for yourself the quality of the information you find. The first step in the evaluation process is to look at the website's URL and at the final syllable in the domain name, which will reveal the producer of the web site and its purpose.

  • .edu = higher education
  • .gov = government agency
  • .org = organization; may be charitable, religious, or a lobbying group
  • .mil = military site
  • ~ = personal site
  • .net = Internet Service Provider
  • .com = commercial site
