This guide is intended to assist students in Dr. Merwine's Human Anatomy and Physiology 1 & 2 classes and Professor James's Labs.

The Research Process

  • Develop a topic that asks a question or poses a problem that interests you.
  • Select appropriate search terms for your subject.  Use the worksheet below for help.
    For example:
    • What are some of the latest breakthroughs in acute lymphoblastic leukemia? "acute lymphoblastic leukemia" AND (breakthrough OR new treatments)
    • What are some muscular disease that affect children?-->(muscle or muscular) diseases AND children
    • How does drug use contribute to birth defects--> drug abuse AND pregnancy
    • What is the best treatment for bipolar disorder?-->("bipolar disorder" AND treatment)
    • What is dermatographic urticaria and can it be treated? -->("dermatographic urticaria" AND treatment)
  • Search PittCat and subject oriented databases.
  • Revise your topic. Determine how you will answer your question.
  • Evaluate your resources carefully!
  • When in doubt, contact your librarian.
