Tips for Navigating Owen Library - Johnstown Campus: Requesting Materials from Elsewhere

Don't get lost in Owen Library! Learn how to find and access various resources & services available at Owen Library or through Pitt's University Library System.

If the material you need is unavailable at Owen Library . . .

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service available to University of Pittsburgh students, faculty, and staff who possess a current PITT ID card. This service allows you to obtain materials not owned by Owen Library, but owned by another library in the University Library System (ULS) or from other libraries throughout the world. ILL also allows you to request materials that are listed in PITTCat as checked out, lost, missing, or on reserve.

There are three options for requesting books through ILL:

Option 1 (Get it!)--Use this option if you've located a book or journal within the ULS, including Storage, through a search in PITTCat:

  • Click on the Title from the results list.
  • Click on the Get it! link.
  • Login with your PITT Computer Account (email) username and password..
  • Select Get it! from the drop down menu.
  • IMPORTANT! Select JOHNSTOWN LENDING as the pickup location.

Option 2 (E-ZBorrow)--Use this option if the book you are seeking is unavailable in any of the ULS libraries:

  • Click on the E-ZBorrow link from PITTCat.
  • Login with your PITT ID number (begins 2P000.....).
  • Search the E-ZBorrow catalog for books from other academic libraries across Pennsylvania and the surrounding region. Only books are available through E-ZBorrow.
  • Select JOHNSTOWN LENDING as the pickup location.

Option 3 (ILL)--Use this option if the book or journal you are seeking is unavailable in any of the ULS libraries or E-ZBorrow libraries:

  • Go to the Interlibrary Loan Request Page and login with your PITT Computer Account (email) username and password.
  • A one-time user registration is required before making an ILL request.  You will not need to re-enter personal information every time you make a request. For delivery location, select JOHNSTOWN LENDING.
  • Click on the appropriate New Request link.
  • Complete the request form as accurately as possible.

Most items are obtained free of charge, and requests usually take 5 to 10 business days to be filled. Start your research early for best results. When your requested material arrives, you will be notified through your PITT e-mail, and you'll be given 10 days to pick it up at the Owen Library Information Desk. Each lending library determines its own loan periods, but most often you may keep a requested book for 28 days. Likewise, each library determines its own overdue fines, and they may be as high as $1.00 a day.

Questions or requests for assistance regarding any part of the Interlibrary Loan process, including Get it! and E-ZBorrow, can be directed to the Owen Library Information Desk (814-269-7300) or ILL Office (814-269-7292).
