The default search searches both books and journals. If you are interested in articles only, use the advanced search to limit your search.

Many of the results will be book reviews, so be sure you know what kind of source you are using! Use PittCat to determine if we have the book here at Pitt.

To get a more manageable results list, uncheck the "Include links to external content" box. Check the "Articles" box under the "ITEM TYPE" subheading.

Use the "DATE RANGE" function to search for more recent articles. E.g. From 01/01/1985 to 01/31/2013

This database will probably be most useful for finding information about Thomas Harriot, John Smith, Thomas Morton, William Bradford, Anne Bradstreet, and Mary Rowlandson or information about literary works.

In the results list, use the icons to the left of the title to determine if you are looking at a book, a review, or an article.

This database will probably be best for finding information about the Pueblo Revolt, Iroquois-Jesuit relations, Anne Bradstreet's poetry, Thomas Harriot, Mary Rowlandson, Thomas Morton, or John Smith's The Generall Historie.

Refrain from using the "Reference Resources" tab, as encyclopedias are inappropriate for this assignment. However, if you are having a hard time finding sources, scanning an encyclopedia article could help you think of some new keywords to use.
