Nonprofit Research @ Pitt: Industry

This guide supports those doing research related to nonprofits and strategic management in the public sector.

  Nonprofit SWOT Analysis

SWOT Analysis

  • - Strengths
  • Weaknesses
  • Opportunites
  • Threats

"...A framework for identifying the internal strengths (S) and weaknesses (W) of a firm, and the external opportunities (O) open to it and the threats (T) it faces, which can be used by corporate planners in formulating the firm's competitive strategy and marketing strategy in individual product markets and its overall business strategy."     - Collins Dictionary of Business

Researching a nonprofit to compile a SWOT analysis is much more difficult than researching a profit making company.  The nonprofits' Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats are quite different.  Because nonprofits do not have to compile the same reports as profit making entities there is much less information available from which to draw.  Looking at the SWOT analysis for companies in the same industry as the nonprofit can be helpful in compiling a SWOT analysis for the nonprofit.

Industry Profiles

There are not separate databases for information on industries in the nonprofit sector.  The industry survey or profile is the same for both the nonprofit and profit making entity.  Some of the better sources for industry profiles are below.
